Description.Life form: lichenized fungus.
Thallus crustose, thin, ~0.2 mm thick, whitish, rimose. Ascomata lecanorine apothecia 1-3 mm diam., sessile; disk heavily whitish-pruinose; thalline margin (amphithecium) prominent, paler than disk. Amphithecium 70-210(-235) µm high, 80-90 µm thick laterally; amphithecial hyphae usually forming a compact pseudocortex. Exiple 15-35(-45) µm thick, +/- yellowish; epihymenium dark brown-purple, thin; hymenium hyaline, 60-95 µm high, I+ blue; paraphyses not well distinct; hypothecium 25-60(-100) µm thick. Asci 8-spored; ascospores ellipsoid, simple, 9-12(-14) × (5-)6-7(-8) µm.
Chemistry. Thallus, apothecial sections K+ yellow, C-, PD+ red or red-orange or PD-; atronorin; other lichenic acids (protocetraric, roccellic acid) sometimes present.
Substrate and Habitat. Corticolous on hardwood trees in mixed hardwood-pine forests and woodlands, also lignicolous, rarely saxicolous.
Distribution. Australia, Neotropics north to North America; in North Carolina found in the Coastal Plain ecoregion.
