Life form. Lichenized fungus.
Description. Thallus crustose, ecorticate, endophloedal; surface smooth to uneven, whitish gray. Vegetative diaspores absent. Photobiont Trentepohlia alga. Ascomata perithecia, black, solitary, 0.3-0.4 mm diam., erumpent to prominent; ostiole apical. Hamathecium hyaline, inspersed; paraphyses sparse. Asci clavate, 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, fusiform, 18-28 x 5-7 μm, 5-7-septate, lumina rectangular or slightly rounded.
Chemistry. Spot tests negative; no substances detected by TLC.
Substrate and habitat. Corticolous on hardwood trees.
Distribution. Pantropical north to coastal astern North America; in North Carolina found in the Coastal Plain ecoregion.
