Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Thallus: continuous, poorly developed, effuse, mostly endophloeodal surface: white anatomy: without a differentiated medulla, I-, K/I- Ascomata: black, scattered, sessile with +constricted base, +round or slightly irregular, 0.2-0.5 mm in diam., with shallow margins scarcely raised above the level of the disc or immarginate disc: black, plane or slightly convex with uneven surface, epruinose exciple: dark red-brown, open below the subhymenium, up to 40 µm wide at the top, up to 75 µm wide at the base, I-, K/I- pseudoepithecium: dark brown, reticulate hymenium: hyaline, 115-150(-180) µm tall, I+ pale red or pale blue turning somewhat red, K/I+ blue; paraphysoids: with apical cells not or slightly thickened, branched and anastomosing subhymenium: hyaline to pale brown, 120-150(200) µm thick, I+ pale red, K/I+ pale blue asci: cylindrical, 90-135 x 10-12 µm, apparently 8-spored ascospores: hyaline, Dryina-type, spirally arranged in asci; cells of spores: 2-4(-5) x 2-3 µm, cubical to +round Pycnidia: not found Secondary metabolites: none detected. Substrate and ecology: on dead Cupressus macrocarpa World and Sonoran distribution: known only from the type locality on the central California coast [Monterey Co.], which is north of the Sonoran region. Notes: Technically Bactrospora spiralis falls north of the Sonoran region, but it may well be found here in the future.
