Life habit: lichenized Thallus: thick, areolate, margin rarely lobate when very young; prothallus: dark between areoles, rarely present at margin areoles: plane, sometimes becoming convex or even subglobose, 0.6-1.6 mm wide surface: ochraceous to brown, waxy Apothecia: frequent, crypotolecanorine or lecanorine, innate at first and remaining broadly attached, usually one per areole, 0.5-0.9 mm in diam. disc: black, dull, plane to convex, margin with aeruginose pigment reacting N+ red; epihymenium: brown hymenium: hyaline, I+ blue; paraphyses: simple or weakly branched; hypothecium: hyaline asci: cylindrical, 8-spored ascospores: brown, 1-septate, 10.515 x 5.5-9 µm, strongly ornamented Pycnidia: frequent, immersed, initially one per areole, ostiole with aeruginose pigment conidia: hyaline, simple, bacilliform, 5.5-7.5 x 1-1.5 µm Spot tests: K-, C-, KC-, P- Secondary metabolites: atranorin in low amounts in cortex. Substrate and ecology: on acidic rocks, basalt World distribution: southwestern, coastal North America Sonoran distribution: southern California, Guadalupe Island, Baja California, from cliffs above the sea to 750 m. Notes: Dimelaena weberi is a rare southern coastal species. bose areolae are remarkably similar to Mobergia angelica.
