Description. Lichenized fungus.
Thallus dimorphic. Primary thallus squamulose, yellowish, of small (1-2 mm wide) rounded and irregular crenate, or dissected imbricate squamules, white beneath. Vegetative diaspores absent. Podetia short, corticate. Ascomata biatorine apothecia, on or near the margin of the squamules, very minute, red.
Chemistry. KC+ gold; usnic acid.
Substrate and Habitat. On humus in coastal woody habitats.
Distribution. Along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of eastern North America; in North Carolina found along the coast.
