Thallus scant, of 1-2 mm broad, verrucose to chinky, convex areolae, yellow to ashy yellow. Apothecia immersed in the high areolae, small, 0.2-0.3 mm broad; exciple pale to yellowish, full of algae; disk black, becoming convex; hypothecium hyaline; hymenium narrow, 45-55 µm, pale violet or brownish violet; paraphyses lax, upper part violet, capitate 5-7 µm at tips, constrictedly septate; spores 8, hyaline, 2-celled, the center constricted, ellipsoid, 9-13 X 4-5 µm.
This species grows on calcareous rocks. Lynge (I.e.) described it from Novaya Zemlya and western Greenland on the Nugssuaq Peninsula. A few specimens (Brodo 19327A, 19358C in CANL) have been collected at Polar Bear Pass, Bathurst Island, Northwest Territories.
