Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Life habit: lichenicolous, commensalistic or weakly parasitic, non-lichenized Ascomata: unknown conidiomata: dark brown to black, convex, pulvinate sporodochia mycelium: hyaline, immersed, often indistinct conidiophores: hyaline, semi-macronematous, often densely ag conidiogenous cells: subcylindrical or ellipsoid, integrated, terminal, monoblastic, rarely polyblasticgregated conidia: in irregularly branched chains, generally septate or submuriform, ellipsoid or of irregular form, dry, subspherical; wall: brown, thick, smooth or verrucose Geography: probably cosmopolitan Substrate: on thalli of crustose lichens, more rarely of macrolichens. Notes: Sclerococcum species form conspicuous, easily visible, blackish sporodochia on the host thallus and are relatively easy to find. The species appear to be host specific, which represents a valuable aide for their identification.
