TYPE. UNITED STATES. New Hampshire. Cheshire County, in rivulets from Wantasquit Mt., Brattleboro, 16.vii.1851, J.L. Russell s.n. = Rel. Tuck. 51 (NY, lectotype designated in Lendemer & O’Brien 2011).
Description.Life form: lichenized fungus.
Thallus foliose, 2-8 cm wide. Lobes semi-erect, fan-shaped, 3-10 mm wide. Upper surface brownish, greenish or bluish black, smooth or covered with blackish warts, 0.1-0.3 mm wide. Vegetative diapsores absent. Lower surface with pale, branched veins. Thallus not stratified; photobiont Nostoc cyanobacteria.Ascomata biatorine apothecia, frequent, submarginal, 0.7-3.0 mm diam.; disk orange to brownish, convex. Asci 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, clavate-fusiform, 4-celled, 24-29-33 x 6.6-7.2-7.8 µm.
Substrate and habitat. Aquatic, saxicolous in high quality streams (cool, clear, silt-free) with rocky beds in partly shaded environments.
Distribution. Appalachian mountains of eastern North America (typical variety only); in North Carolina found in the Blue Ridge ecoregion.
Note. This lichen is distinct as a fully aquatic species and an indicator of water quality. Here described at the species level, molecular evidence has split it into three taxa, currently recognized as varieties: aquatica, gowardii and the typical variety (McCune & Stone 2022). Varieties aquatica and gowardii are present in the Pacific Northwest of North America and are considered cryptic species, only distinguishable by DNA analysis.
