TYPE. BRAZIL. Brasilia privinc., C.F.P. Martius s.n. (M M-0102170 / 554394 / 233644, lectotype designated by B. Staiger & M. Mathis-Leight, 2000).

Description. Life form: lichenized fungus.

Thallus crustose, epiphloedal, whitish to pale yellowish, thick, rimose to rimose-areolate; surface dull, epruinose; vegetative diaspores absent; prothallus present as a thin black line. Photobiont trentepohlioid alga. Ascomata lirellae, short, elliptical to oblong, 0.3-1.0 mm long, prominent; thalline margin distinct; excipular margin thin, indistinct, raised; disk open, flat, brown-blackish, epruinose. Exciple laterally carbonized, pale yellowish brown below; hymenium hyaline, inspersed, I-. Asci 8-spored; ascospores brownish, narrowly oblone, 5-7-septate, 17-26 x 6-8 μm.

Chemistry. UV+ bright yellow (lichexanthone); K+ yellow turning red (norstictic acid).

Substrate and Habitat. Corticolous hardwood trees.

Distribution. Neotropical north into southeastern North America; in North Carolina found in the Coastal Plain ecoregion.
