Diagnosis (pp. 258-259): "Thallus forming a black crust or composed of dispersed or aggregated areoles and/or lobes, pseudoparenchymatous in structure, not lichenized; stolons bearing microthalli often present; macroconidia formed superficially, microconidia in pycnidia; in some species lobuli, clusters of cells or proliferations functions as vegetative diaspores. Ascomata pulvinate, pseudoangiocarpic or apothecoid; hamathecium pseudoparenchymatous or cells elongated to form pseudoparaphyses; asci bitunicate, ascospores verrucose, pale to brown, 1-3-septate, gradually sub- to eumuriform (within the ascus or after dihescence)."
