Thallus chinky-areolate, areolae angular, to 1 mm broad, flat or slightly convex, rough, white. Apothecia to 1.1 mm broad, sessile to more or less elevated on thallus and with base constricted; exciple with exterior blue, pale internally, cells radiate fan-like, thick-walled; disk black, lacking pruina; hypothecium hyaline; epihymenium very blue; hymenium 80-85 μm, inspersed, upper part blue; spores ellipsoid, tips rounded, 12-18 X 7-8 μm.

This species grows on silicate rocks. Although this is a circumpolar arctic-alpine species, it seems rare, and its range in North America is very uncertain. Hertel (1970a) reported it from Alberta and Wyoming, but it also occurs northward, and hence is included here.
