Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Life habit: lichenized Thallus: crustose to granular to squamulose; prothallus: absent or present, arachnoid, white; isidia and soredia: absent cortex: a well-developed phenocortex with a thin epinecral layer, both without crystals medulla: very thin or indiscernable photobiont: primary one a chlorococcoid green alga, secondary one absent Ascomata: apothecial, biatorine, becoming almost globose with age, up to c. 1 mm wide disc: pink to brown to black, dull, convex, epruinose, containing various combinations of a green to blue-green (K-, N+ purple), brown (K+ purplish, N+ orange), and a pale yellow to orange (K+ intensifying, N+ intensifying) pigments exciple: annular, prosoplechtenchymatic, composed of radiating ±branched and anastomosed hyphae with moderately thick, gelatinized, conglutinated walls and cylindrical lumina; terminal cells of the excipular hyphae: not or only slightly enlarged, with massively gelatinized walls swelling strongly in K, without crystals hymenium: colorless below, pigmented above, 70-130 µm tall paraphyses: straight, 2-3(-4) µm wide in mid-hymenium, ±conglutinated, unbranched or sparingly branched in upper part, often also anastomosed; apical cells: swollen or not hypothecium: ±brown, without crystals and oil droplets, chondroid asci: clavate, thick-walled in upper part, surrounded by a gelatinous, amyloid sheet, with a well-developed, amyloid tholus containing a deeper amyloid, conical zone around the axial body and a widely conical ocular chamber (Biatora-type), often staining faintly, 8-spored ascospores: hyaline, transversely 3-5(-9)-septate, fusiform, straight, often with warted perispore Conidiomata: not known Secondary metabolites: zeorin or none detected Geography: arctic and temperate regions of Europe and North America Substrate: calcareous soil, detritus, and decaying bryophytes. Notes: Myxobilimbia is distinct from Mycobilimbia s. str. on account of its massively gelatinized terminal cells of the proper exciple, thicker paraphyses, thicker ascus wall, and the occurrence of a warted perispore in some species.
