Note: The genus Chiodecton was originally described by Acharius in 1814 and since then over 200 species have been placed in the genus. Thor (1990) was able to examine type material of c. 180 of these species, and he was able to circumscribe c. 60 of these in a restricted concept of the genus with Chiodecton (after synonymy) having 16 species and 5 related genera having 12 species total. These species occur predominately in the Southern Hemisphere and Asia. The one species, "Chiodecton" ochroleucum occurring in the Sonoran region was studied but not included in this group of 28 species. No hint for the potential placement of Sonoran species in a genus was given (or is currently available, Thor, personal communication), and as far as I can tell the species has not been studied since. Accordingly, it is inappropriate to propose a genus in the absence of monographs of the species not treated by Thor. Tehler (personal communication) suggests that it may well belong to one of species already described in the flora, but in the absence of specimen no definitive suggestion can be made.
