Thallus consisting of minute, dark brown to black, stalked, buttonlike areoles, which become contiguous above, almost forming a contiguous crustose surface. Perithecia numerous, semi-immersed, asci narrowly ellipsoid, 8-spored. Ascospores hyaline, simple.
The new genus within Verrucariales is characterrzed by its peltate, richly fertile thallus.
The above description was previously suggested by M. Skytte Christiansen. The species almost has a subfruticose growth form as young, with upright, round and stalked areoles and one perithecium at the top of the areole, only. Later on further perithecia are formed from the margin of the first ones leading to an umbilicate growth form with the areoles fully occupied by perithecia. An involucrellum covers the top of the perithecia. Placopyrenium O. Breuss has an effigurate thallus with elongate, dividing areoles at the margin. Further it has a grey necral layer. The stalk has a carbonaceous cortex and it is without an involucrellum.
