Description.Life form: lichenicolous fungus or borderline lichen.
Thallus absent. Ascomata stalked apothecia, 0.4-0.6 mm tall, black, black or stalk dark brown (to partly hyaline); capitulum broadly obovoid, 0.2-0.3 mm diam.; stalk 0.04-0.07 mm diam. Exciple and outer part of stalk reddish brown; epithecium reddish brown; hymenium and hypothecium aeruginosa, obconical, 40-65 µm. Asci cylindrical with a thickened apex penetrated by a narrow canal, 8-spored, uniseriate; ascospores 8-10 × 2.5-3.5 µm, 1-septate, septum distinct, paler than spore wall.
Chemistry. Reddish pigment N+ reddish (intensifying), K+ yellowish brown
Substrate and Habitat. Associated with Trentepohlia or Trentepohlia-containing lichens (Arthonia, Lecanactis) on bark or more rarely on wood.
Distribution. Europe, North and South America; in North Carolina found in the Blue Ridge ecoregion. Very rare throughout its range.
