Thallus verrucose to subsquamulose, the squamules convex, white to ashy white, yellowish white to pale brownish, on indistinct hypothallus. Apothecia adnate, aggregate, black, bare, to 0.8 mm broad, flat with raised margin, becoming convex and immarginate; exciple and hypothecium red-brown; epihymenium olive-green or green-black; hymenium pale, 35-40 µm; paraphyses not coherent, slender, tips to 2.5 µm; spores 3-septate, oblong to subacicular fusiform, tips blunt, 14-30 X 3-6 µm.
This species grows on mossy soil and on rocks. It is known from Scandinavia, Siberia, Spitz-bergen, and Greenland. It is not yet known from North America but should be sought in the eastern Canadian Arctic, as it is found in western Greenland.
