Thallus thin, scant, of small verrucules, lacking soredia; hypothallus lacking. Apothecia tiny, 0.3-0.5 mm, base not much constricted, attached broadly; exciple brown to violet-brown, of radiating, slightly branching hyphae; disk flat to slightly convex, black or brownish black, bare, dull, becoming immarginate; hypothecium pale brownish, upper part of erect hyphae; epihymenium hyaline but with inspersed granules; hymenium 60-100 μm, lower part brownish, 1+ blue becoming red; paraphyses simple to slightly branched, tips not thickened, coherent; asci clavate; spores biseriate or uniseriate, ellipsoid or oblong-ellipsoid, 11-18 x 5-9 μm.
Reactions: negative with usual reagents except for the 1+ hymenium.
This species grows on Salix bark, often in Picea forests. It is reported in Fennoscandia and in the Reindeer Preserve and Cape Parry, Northwest Territories. It seems to be very rare.
