Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Sporodochia: superficial, dark brown to black, +round, convex, mainly single, up to 2 mm in diam. conidiophores: 5-15 x 3-6 µm conidiogenous cells: pale brown, integrated, terminal conidia: dark golden brown, sub-spherical, verrucose, irregular in size, mostly 15-25 µm in diam. Hosts: extremely common on plants, often on leaf spots due to other parasitic fungi, rarely on lichen thalli; also isolated from air, animals, food, textiles, etc.; in the Sonoran region, known as a commensal on the thallus of Diploschistes, not visibly damaging the host World distribution: cosmopolitan Sonoran distribution: once found as lichenicolous in alpine areas of central Arizona. Notes: Epicoccum purpurascens has several times been reported as occurring on lichens (Diederich 2003). Whether the lichenicolous specimens belong to the same species or represent an additional, yet undescribed lichenicolous taxon, can only be decided when more lichenicolous specimens become available.
