Description. Life form: lichenized fungus.
Thallus foliose, irregular, up to 3 cm diam. Lobes narrow, elongate, appressed, 2-4 x 0.5-1.0 mm; margins somewhat upturned. Upper surface pale bluish gray, smooth, dotted with pycnidia. Vegetative diaspores phyllidia (flattened isidia) or isidioid soredia, coarse, ecorticate, paler than thallus surface, along lobe margins, especially on older parts of the thallus. Lower surface black, ecorticate, up to 1 mm thick and spongy. Thallus stratified: upper cortex 28-38 μm thick, hyaline to brownish; photobiont Trebouxia alga in a layer of varying thickness, averaging ~25 μm; medulla consisting of two layers: an upper loose, hyaline layer, 35-50 μm thick, and a lower dense greenish to bluish green layer, 25-31 μm thick; lower cortex absent. Ascomata not known.
