Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Thallus: crustose, granular to areolate areoles: convex, 0.1-0.3 mm wide, rounded to angular or irregular in outline, scattered to crowded sometimes aggregated into thicker crusts surface: green yellow to orange yellow, smooth Apothecia: common, lecanorine, 0.2-0.5 mm wide disc: darker yellow than the thallus, round, soon becoming strongly convex margin: thin, concolorous with the thallus, soon excluded in most apothecia, sometimes partly remaining exciple: not visible from the outside, well-developed and fan-shaped in sections epihymenium: yellow-brown hymenium: hyaline, 55-60 µm tall; paraphyses: simple, cylindrical or with sligthly swollen, up to 3 µm wide tips; hypothecium: hyaline asci: clavate, 8-spored ascospores: hyaline, simple to 1-septate, narrowly ellipsoid to oblong, 12-16 x 4-6 µm Pycnidia: common, appear as orange yellow granules conidia: hyaline, oblong to ellipsoid, 2.5-3.5 x 1.5-2 µm Spot tests: K+ reddish, KC-, C- Secondary metabolites: calycin, pulvinic acid, pulvinic dilactone and vulpinic acid. Substrate and ecology: often collected on decorticated trunks of Juniperus deppeana but also on pines, oaks and shrubs in deseret scrub, riparian woodland, canyons and pine forests up to at least 2100 m World distribution: southwestern North America Sonoran distribution: in Arizona, Chihuahua, Baja California Sur and Baja California. Notes: Candelariella "deppeanae" is characterized by its small granular to areolate thallus and its convex apothecia, that often appear to lack a marign. The thallus is similar to that of C. xanthostigma, that predominantely grows on bark and has ±flat apothecia, polysporous asci and a thallus, that is almost entirely composed of small granules. Sterile specimen may, however, be +morphologically similar.
