Thallus thin, continuous, brownish gray. Photobiont absent. Ascomata compound perithecia, black, round to irregular, with 2-15 ascomatal chambers, each with an ostiole and many asci. Hymenium hyaline, inspersed. Asci obpyriform, 8-spored; ascospores hyaline to brownish, muriform, 8-10-rows of locelli, ends rounded, 45-55 x 18-23 µm. Conidiomata not known.

Distribution. East Africa (type locality), Caribbean (Puerto Rico), eastern North America; in North Carolina found in Blue Ridge ecoregion.
