thallus strongly effigurate, forming a lovely rosette; areoles gomphate to subsquamulose at margin, convex, shiny dark red-brown, smooth to fissured, dark brown-black underneath; cortex up to 100um, with very thin epinecral layer, cells ~3-5um; algal layer even to interrupted where thallus fissured; cortex and/or medulla C+r; apothecia angular, rough, dark brown, crowded; epihymenium red-brown; hymenium up to 200um; paraphyses thin; spores many per ascus, ~4-5x2-2.5um
