small young aspen and hawthorn grove in middle of prairie
aspen wood
thin whitish stain in wood, K- C- KC- UV- P-, apothecia abundant crowded to scattered small thin sessile, disk red-brown to black-brown matte epruinose flat to undulating or convex, margin thin black epruinose becoming almost excluded, epihymenium dark brown somewhat coarsely granular ~POL+ ~clearing in K, exciple of thin gelatinized branching hyaline hyphae expanding markedly to globose blackish to brownish outer cells especially visible in K darker above than below, algae abundant below and scattered into exciple right to top cells large and globose to 20-22um, hymenium hyaline not inspersed ~30-40um, paraphyses moderately branched expanding markedly at tips brown-capped to 3-4um separating easily in K, asci with K/I+ thick tip with broad K/I- canal all the way through (obvious Lecanora type), spores 8 per ascus hyaline simple smooth ellipsoid-oblong ~6-8x3-4um (out of ascus)
