south facing serpentine slope with scattered dwared _Pinus ponderosa_ and mostly dead _Arctostaphylos_

squamules to ~4mm wide, green to rich red-brown, ~shiny, margin raised; underside pure black, no rhizines, rhizohyphae hyaline to brownish ~4-5um wide; cortex ~40um on top with cells to ~10um with thin indistinct epinecral layer, indistinct below and black; medulla full of globose cells; spores 8 per ascus, obliquely uniseriate, ~10-12x5-6um; pycnidia marginal and growing on top of cracks and perithecia (!); conidia oblong-ellipsoid, ~3-4(5)x1.2-1.7um
