Abundant on vertical north-facing cliff faces frequently bathed by dense fog
rock
under this local condition the squamules become luxuriant and stipitate-branched. During the process the interstices between the stipes fill with soil washing in from above; as the thalli become larger and the stipes shrink, the soil washes away leaving distinctly fruticulose thalli, which are very fragile and can be obtained by scraping off with a knive.
