New for North America. Ascocpores dark, 2-septate, 1/ascus. sp. 3-celled brown; rarely 4-celled. 1/ascus. 116 x 38 - 111 x 35. Apparently new to North America. (herb. Rosentreter). Although in 1952 Frey made this a variety of Solorina bispora, the spores differ conspicuously from S. bispora not only in septation, but also in size. In this collection, the spores are mostly 3-celled, with the middle cell larger, less often 4-celled, and about 110-120 x 30-35 um. We believe this taxon deserves recognition at the species level. Solorina monospora was originally published by Gyelnik in 1930, based on a record from Switzerland (Magy. Bot. Lapok, 1930, p. 29). It also occurs very rarely in Great Britain (Purvis et al. 1992). Substrate: Terricolous.
