Erroneous reports of lichen-forming, lichenicolous and allied fungi from North America (version #23)
Comments: ATTENTION: This list of erroneous North American reports is currently still a work in progress, being updated and edited.

Included in the list below are species now excluded from the Checklist of Lichen-forming, lichenicolous and allied fungi of the continental US & Canada (Version 23). The records listed below are based on erroneous reports of species cited from this area; these records are not to be confused with taxa previously reported, but now considered synonyms. Taxonomic synonyms are instead listed with their currently accepted names (provided that the user has enabled "Display Synonyms" from the sidebar menu). For species reports accepted for the continental US & Canada please refer to the main checklist.

significant change since the previous checklist version (#22): North American report is A. brucei, source: Knudsen & Kocourková 2018b
[Polythelis sexlocularis (Müll. Arg.) Clem.]
The implied occurrence of this species in Florida is questionable. No material seen from North America
[Arthonia alba Müll.Arg., Stirtonia caribaea Perlmutter, Rivas Plata & Lücking]
Arthonia alba Müll. Arg. should be transferred to Stirtonia, but S. alba Groenh. ex Makhija & Patw. already exists., source: Perlmutter et al. (2018) therefore introduced the replacement name Stirtonia caribaea, but they also reported that the taxon does not occur in North America.
Nash (2002) placed Verrucaria circumspersella into synonymy of Thelidium circumspersellum, but also suggested that the taxon was absent from North America [also see Nash (2007)].
[Usnea shimadai Asahina]
In North America, only known in Mexico (Clerc 2004); the name was originally published as U. shimadai, but this spelling is orthographically incorrect
