Thallus moderately thick, warty-uneven or of granules forming a discontinuous crust, dull, dark brown, olive-brown, or blackish brown, with a margin of fimbriate hypothallus hyphae. Perithecia 0.15—0.2 mm broad, half immersed in the areolae; exciple blackish, entire around the perithecium; involucrellum narrow and not differentiated well from the exciple, black; gelatin 1+ red; spores elongate or ellipsoid, 12-20 X 5—8 µm.
This is a species found on granitic and schistose rocks. It is known from northern Europe and the Tyrolean Alps. In North America it is rare, known from the Reindeer Preserve and the valley of the Arctic Red River.
