Lynge B 1928. Lichens from Novaya Zemlya. In Holtedahl O. Report of the Scientific Results of the Norwegian Expedition to Novaya Zemlya 1921. Oslo. 1-299.
Thallus crustose, uniform, moderately thick, small: diam. in specimen. 14-15 mm, grayish-dark brown, irregularly areolate, areolae contiguous, diam. 0.2-0.3 mm, angular or crenulate, sometimes rimose, slightly convex, slightly shiny, epruinose, smooth. Hypothallus black, seen here and there between areoles, narrow zone surrounding thallus.
Apothecia sparse, dispersed, deeply immersed in areoles, very small: disc diam. 0.1-0.2 mm, black, epruinose, surrounded by slightly tumid, false thalline margin. Hypothecium completely hyaline. Paraphyses loosely coherent, apices capitate. Spores dark, 2-celled, contricted middle, broadly oval: 15-16 X 9-11 µ.
Pycnidia vainly sought.
Medulla I, KOH and CaCl2O2 unchanged.
Only one plant was detected. Its profoundly immersed apothecia and its uncoloured hypothecium refer this species to VAINIO’s section Semibuellia of his genus Melanaspicilia, which is so well represented in the Arctis. The minute apothecia are so profoundly immersed in the thallus that the surrounding parts of the small areolae imitate a thick thalline margin.
