Thallus crustose, obsolete to thinly uneven-verruculose, subgranulose, ashy white to greenish white, lacking distinct hypothallus. Apothecia subglobose, tiny, 0.2-0.4 mm, fleshy brown to red-brown or brown-black, commonly the center darker; exciple hyaline to pale yellowish, of radiating hyphae; hypothecium reddish to brownish above and pale below, upper part K+ reddish; epihymenium pale; hymenium 40-55 μm, upper part pale, lower merging into hypothecium, 1+ blue turning red; paraphyses simple, tips slightly thickened, coherent; spores biseriate, simple to some 1-septate, ellipsoid, 7-13 x 3-4 μm.
This species grows on Alnus, Pyrus, Salix, and Juniperus bark and wood. It is known from Fennoscandia in Europe and has recently been reported from reindeer antlers in the Reindeer Preserve, Northwest Territories.
This species is similar to L. albohyalina but differs in the darker apothecium color and dark hypothecium, as well as slightly broader spores.
