Thallus: consisting of a filamentous layer on the substrate (a subiculum) upper surface: black; photobiont: absent Perithecia: hemispherical, black, immersed in the subiculum, 0.15-0.3 mm diam. ascomatal wall: black, absent below the hamathecium hamathecium: unbranched pseudoparaphyses, not anastomosing; filaments: up to c. 3 µm wide below, cells often swollen (moniliform), not inspersed with oil droplets asci: pyriform, c. 50-60 x 22-27 µm, with 8, irregularly arranged ascospores ascospores: hyaline but becoming brown when old,, clavate, 3-septate (starting with a supramedian euseptum), 20-23 x 6-9 µm, often breaking into part spores; walls: not ornamented, with a 2-3 µm wide gelatinous sheath Spot tests: all negative, UV negative Secondary metabolites: none detected. Substrate and ecology: on bark of Populus tremuloides World distribution: northern temperate or nearly cosmopolitan Sonoran distribution: only collected once in Arizona.
