Perithecia: semi-immersed or superficial, black, scattered, or in small groups, sometimes confluent, lentiform or sub-globose, upper part flat or concave in mature ascomata, 70150 µm tall and 100-300 µm wide, neither producing distinct galls nor deformations nor necrotic patches in the host thallus wall: black brown throughout centrum: I+ pale blue or I- hamathecium: interascal filaments abundant, mostly restricted to the upper part of ascomata, branched, anastomosing, 1.5-3 µm thick asci: ±clavate, 35-90 x 2650 µm, with distichously arranged ascospores, 4-8-spored ascospores: pale brown, the oldest dark brown, 1-septate, lower cell narrower than the upper one, constricted at the septum, frequently with a well-developed gelatinous sheath, not ornamented, 19-30 x 10-15 µm. Hosts: endolithic thalli of Verrucaria and other calcicolous Verrucariaceae World distribution: Europe, Africa (Morocco), and North America (U.S.A.) Sonoran distribution: Arizona. Notes: The semi-immersed or superficial ascomata, interascal filaments mostly restricted to the upper part of the ascomata, and the relatively large ascospores, without a clear ornamentation, and with a distinct gelatinous sheath are characteristic of this species.
