Life form. Lichenized fungus.
Description. [modified from Lücking (2008)] Thallus dispersed into rounded, confluent patches 0.5-2 mm diam., entire thallus 5-15 mm across and 20-30 pm thick, corticate, smooth, white; cortex composed of rectangular cells, 4-10 x 3-5 μm, in radiating rows when seen from above, hyaline. Ascomata zeorine apothecia, usually single on each thallus patch, immersed-erumpent, 0.2-0.4 mm diam., 110-170 μm high; disk flat, yellowish to brownish grey, slightly translucent; margin rather thick, prominent, dissected into irregular, vertical lobes, black, in young apothecia covering disk. Excipulum paraplectenchymatous, 5-10 μm wide, hyaline, laterally covered by black, corticate, thalline tissue. Hypothecium hyaline, 5-15 μm high; hymenium hyaline, 90-150 μm high; epithecium indistinct. Asci ovoid, 80-120 x 20-30 μm, 8-spored; ascospores hyaline, ellipsoid, 1 septate, with thick walls (1-2 μm) and slight constriction at septum, 35-55 x 9-14 μm, 4-4.5 times as longer than wide. Conidiomata pycnidia, marginal, adnate, wart-shaped to conical, black, 0.1-0.15 mm diam. and 50-70 μm high; wall formed by meandering hyphae, blackish brown; conidia hyaline, simple, oblong ellipsoid, 6-8 x 2-2.5 μm.

Substrate and habitat: Foliocolous on evergreen leaves and on bamboo culms in open microhabitats.
Distribution. Paleotropical and Neotropical to southeastern North America; in North Carolina found in the Coastal Plain ecoregion.
