Nash, T.H., Ryan, B.D., Gries, C., Bungartz, F., (eds.) 2004. Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region. Vol 2.
Basidiomata: absent; fungus inducing the formation of convex galls concolorous with or paler than the host thallus, cerebriform when old, with a dull, non-corticated surface, 0.5-4 mm in diam. hyphae: context hyphae: 1.5-2 µm in diam.; clamp connections: not observed; fertile hyphae: thick-walled, 2-3 µm in diam. haustorial branches: present but rare; mother cell: subspherical, 3.5-4 µm in diam.; haustorial filament: 0.5 µm in diam., up to 2 µm long hymenium: poorly developed, basidia situated in the outer layer of the galls; probasidial initials: subspherical or ellipsoid, proliferations occurring through the basal clamp; hyphidia and cystidia: absent basidia: when mature, 24-celled, subspherical, with longitudinal septa, 17-24 x 14-23 µm, rarely elongate, with an attenuated base, with oblique or transverse septa, 25-31 x 12-14 µm; epibasidia: subcylindrical, 3.5-5.5 µm in diam., 40-50 µm long basidiospores: subspherical, with a distinct apiculus, 7-9 x 7-8 µm Anamorph: unknown. Hosts: thalli of Dendrographa species, inducing the formation of conspicuous, cerebriform galls reaching up to 4 mm in diam. World and Sonoran distribution: southern California and Baja California, very common in the distribution area of the hosts. Notes: Tremella dendrographae is a very common fungus, infecting about 2/3's of the thalli of Dendrographa, and inducing the formation of particularly large and visible, whitish galls on the host thallus.
