Thallus squamose-areolate, areoles (0.6-) 1-1.6 millim. broad, 0.2-0.3 millim. thick, rounded or angular, dispersed or slightly contiguous, plane or rarely depressed-convex, white above or ashy grey-white, smooth and polished, moderately opaque; neither I nor KHO, nor CaCl2O2 with reactions, blackish below (aeruginose-sooty under the microscope), sometimes surrounded by narrow, black hypothallus, apothecia numerous, containing circ. 3-40. Apothecia immersed in thallus, immarginate, crowded and partly confluent, disc rounded or deformed, slightly impressed or unequal in thallus, black, naked, moderately opaque, commonly circ. 0.1-0.2 millim. broad. Perithecium disappearing. Hypothecium pale or reddish-pale or white, I bluish, thin, circ. 0.040 millim. thick. Hymenium moderately thick, 0.050-0.060 millim., I persistently bluish. Epithecium bluish or aeruginose-bluish. Paraphyses moderately lax, coherent (lax in KHO), 0.0015-0.002 millim. thick, apices slightly thickened. Asci broadly clavate, apices membrane thickened. Spores 8, distichous, simple, hyaline, subglobose-ellipsoid, 0.006-0.009 millim. long, 0.004-0.006 millim. thick, membrane moderately thickened, subgelatinous. Gonidia globose, only simple ones seen, diam. circ. 0.012-0.014 millim., tawny, membrane moderately thin.—Notes internally approaching towards Aspicilia, but hypothecium thinner and external appearance and apothecia often deformed largely agreeing with Acarospora.
