Thallus thin, of very small portions, almost disappearing, brownish olive, gelatinous when wet, the medulla containing groups of oil cells.
Perithecia black, the base partly immersed or the perithecium appearing to be adnate if the thallus is scant, hemispherical, 0.25-0.4 mm broad, the tip nipple-shaped, narrowly perforate; exciple entirely black, thickening to the base; gelatin I+ red; spores ellipsoid, 18-24 X 10-12 μm.
This species grows on seashells along coasts. It is known from northern Europe and has been reported from Greenland by Hansen (1982), from Disko Island in the West and from near Scorsby in the East. It should be sought along the arctic shores on the seashells.
