Thompson, J., 1997. American Arctic Lichens: The Microlichens.
Thallus areolate-granulose, black, reddening when wet. Apothecia immersed, perithecium-like with punctate ostiole, 0.1 mm broad; hypothecium pale; epihymenium brownish or hyaline; hymenium hyaline, 125 μm, gelatinous; spores 8, hyaline, broadly ellipsoid, 11-15 X 6-9 μm in European material, 6-10 x 3-5 μm in Lynge’s (1937) Greenland material.
This species grows on acid rocks which are frequently moistened, as on trickle surfaces. It is known from Europe and Greenland, where Lynge reported it from the Julianehaab District (1937). It may well be overlooked because of its resemblance to algal crusts and its nearly invisible fruits. It should be sought in the American Arctic.
