Thallus areolate, the areolae to 4 mm broad 1 mm thick, high-convex, the margins slightly incised, rose-brown or pale red-brown, umbilicate; underside dark brown. Apothecia several per squamule or areola, to 1.5 mm broad, innate; margin thick, I-; disk flat, brown-black, slightly shining; a thick gelatinous layer over paraphyses tips; hypothecium grayish, 1+ blue; epihymenium olive-brown; hymenium hyaline, 75-100 μm, 1+ blue turning reddish; paraphyses distinct, branching, 1 μm, tips to 3-5 μm; spores 9-13 x 4-7 μm. Conidia elliptical to subglobose, 2-3 μm.
This species grows on granitic rocks. It is known from the Julianehaab District, southern Greenland, and Torne Lappmark in Scandinavia. It should be sought in the American Arctic.
