Thallus: composed of small subgranular fragments, spreading in irregular patches, thin, uneven, subgelatinous when wet, with a fimbriate prothallus areoles: dispersed or crowded to form irregular flecks surface: greenish brown to brown, dull, rough anatomy: subparaplectenchymatous throughout, with algal cells 7-11 µm in diam., with interspersed substrate granules Perithecia: hemispherically prominent; exciple: subglobose, 0.25-0.30 mm wide, colorless; involucrellum: extending down as far as the base of the perithecium, contiguous with the exciple except near the base, laterally 25-30 µm thick, near the apex c. 40 µm; periphyses 20-25 µm long, simple asci: clavate, 70-80 x 20-25 µm, 8-spored ascospores: hyaline, simple, ellipsoid, 25-30 x 10-12.5 µm Pycnidia: unknown Spot tests: all negative Secondary metabolites: none detected. Substrate and ecology: epilithic, on calcareous rocks, montane World distribution: Europe, North America Sonoran distribution: known from Arizona (Pima Co., Santa Catalina Mts.) and California (Riverside Co.). Notes: Verrucaria inornata differs from V. memnonia in having larger spores and pale exciples.
