Basidiomata: pulvinate, discoid, subspherical-applanate, becoming tuberculate when old, with a constricted base, firm gelatinous, yellowish to reddish brown, 0.4-3 mm in diam. hyphae: context hyphae: 1-1.7 µm in diam., thin-walled; clamp connections: not observed haustorial branches: present; mother cell: ellipsoid, 2-4 x 1-2 µm hymenium: hyaline, containing numerous probasidia; probasidial initials: clavate to obpyriform, proliferations occurring through the basal clamp; hyphidia and cystidia: absent basidia: when mature, typically obpyriform, with 2 transverse septa, the upper third with one longitudinal septum, constricted at the septa, 23-34 x 8-14 µm, the lower cell elongate, with an attenuated stalk-like base, 1015(-18) µm long and 5-7 µm broad; 'atypical' basidia with only longitudinal septa: present and predominant in some specimens epibasidia: 2-4 µm thick, 25-35 µm long basidiospores: subglobose, with a large apiculus, 5-6.5 x 4-6 µm. Anamorph: unknown. Hosts: thalli of Ramalina and Vermilacinia species World distribution: Mexico, U.S.A. and Sweden Sonoran distribution: Baja California and southern California. Notes: Tremella ramalinae has a remarkable kind of basid-enlarged third having one additional longitudinal septum. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Tremella species are ium, with generally two transverse septa, the upper, often extremely variable, and that specimens with mainly 'atypical' basidia occur.
