Thallus areolate, the areolae to 0.5 mm broad, roundish to roundish angular, verrucose, convex to strongly convex, yellow to whitish yellow, smooth, dull, medulla at least in upper part yellow; hypothallus not visible. Apothecia to 0.7 mm broad, roundish to round, when young with thick margin and slightly convex, becoming spheroid and immarginate, some divided into smaller parts; exciple reddish brown; hypothecium brownish red to red; epithecium dark with dark granules; hymenium 90-110 µn, hyaline, upper part dark red; paraphyses clavate, upper part dark; spores 8, muriform with few septa, with halo, dark, 14-20 x 10-13 µm.
This species grows on acid rocks. It is known so far only from the type locality in southern Greenland plus a few localities in Canada. Runemark (1956) noted its association at some stage with Tremolecia {Lecidea) atrata as a possible parasite.
