Thallus warty to coralloid, pale ashy and reddish variegated. Apothecia lecideine, adnate; margin at first lecanorine, soon lecideine, black; disk at first reddish brown, becoming black; hypothecium with clustered reddish grains, brownish; epihymenium blackish blue-green, not in-spersed; hymenium 100-120 µm; paraphyses weakly branching and anastomosing, 1.5 µm, tips slightly thickened; asci clavate; spores 2 or 4 in ascus, hyaline, becoming pale brown, muriform many-celled, 22-41 X 9-15 µm.
This species grows on soil and moss, rarely on bark. It is known from the Sukkertoppen District, Greenland (Alstrup 1981), and from the Alps in Europe, and was recently reported from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, by Brodo etal. (1987).
