Life form. Lichenized fungus.
Description. Thallus crustose, ochraceous white to white, smooth to slightly warted, slightly to strongly rimose;. prothallus absent. Ascomata lecideine apothecia, 0.35-0.6 mm diam., sessile; disk black, flat to convex, non-pruinose; margin non-pruinose. Exciple 30-60 μm thick, outer part carbonaceous, med. pale brown; hypothecium dark brown; hymenium 80-100 μm, inspersed; epithecium brown, red- or olive-brown, K-. Asci (8-12-)16-spored; ascospores brown, 2-celled with thin septum, wall slightly subapically thickened, smooth to finely sculptured, apices widely rounded, (13-)15-17 x 6-7(-8) μm. Conidiomata not reported.
Chemistry. UV-, K- or + yellow or + red; atronorin or norstictic acid detected by TLC.
Substrate and habitat. Corticolous in forests.
Distribution. East Asian – east North American disjunct; in North Carolina found in the Blue Ridge ecoregion.
